BaZi (八字), often called the Four Pillars of Destiny, is a traditional Chinese calendrical astrology system built from the year, month, day and hour of birth. Each pillar pairs a Heavenly Stem with an Earthly Branch, producing the “eight characters” behind the name BaZi.

The Ten Gods are relationship labels derived by comparing other chart elements with the Day Master through element and yin/yang relationships. Despite the name, they are analytical categories rather than ten deities.
How the pieces fit together
A useful learning order is structure first, interpretation second. Start with the four pillars, identify the Day Master, then learn how the Five Elements and yin/yang relationships connect the other chart components. More advanced layers such as Ten Gods and luck cycles are interpreted relative to that foundation. A single symbol rarely carries a sensible meaning by itself.
What to be careful with
BaZi has multiple schools and practitioner conventions. Automated calculators can also differ because of time-zone handling, solar-term boundaries and birth-time assumptions. If a reading makes precise claims about health, money or guaranteed future events, treat those as claims—not facts—and avoid using them in place of qualified professional advice.
