BaZi (八字), often called the Four Pillars of Destiny, is a traditional Chinese calendrical astrology system built from the year, month, day and hour of birth. Each pillar pairs a Heavenly Stem with an Earthly Branch, producing the “eight characters” behind the name BaZi.

Within Four Pillars practice, the Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar. The other chart relationships are commonly interpreted relative to it, which is why learning the Day Master is more useful than memorizing isolated zodiac stereotypes.
How the pieces fit together
A useful learning order is structure first, interpretation second. Start with the four pillars, identify the Day Master, then learn how the Five Elements and yin/yang relationships connect the other chart components. More advanced layers such as Ten Gods and luck cycles are interpreted relative to that foundation. A single symbol rarely carries a sensible meaning by itself.
What to be careful with
BaZi has multiple schools and practitioner conventions. Automated calculators can also differ because of time-zone handling, solar-term boundaries and birth-time assumptions.
